The following newspaper excerpt (dated 08.03.1943) describes why Marbach was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“The Führer has furthermore awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross to Major der Reserve Paul Marbach, Bataillon commander in a Grenadier-Regiment. On two separate occasions Major Marbach forced a breakthrough through the Bolshevik regiments that were trying to block the retreat route of his Division in the Voronezh area. Marbach remained in the foremost line despite receiving a shot to the neck.”
