During the fighting for the Luga bridgehead, the Soviets attacked a portion of the Grenadier-Regiment 422 commanded by Hauptmann Marreck, which was in position at a train station. The thinly held German frontline was lost across a width of 400 metres, and in response Marreck launched a counterattack with what few Grenadiers he could muster. In the course of the heavy fighting that followed the enemy was thrown back with heavy losses. For this action Marreck would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
