The Soviets began an attack on the northern part of the Demyansk corridor on the 01.12.1942. Their target was Grenadier-Regiment 174, which was located in the Ssorokino sector (south of Gorby). The aim of the assault was to cut off this unit’s connection with the 290. Infanterie-Division, and in the fighting which ensued this objective was completed. However on the evening of the 12.12.1942 the III./Infanterie-Regiment 174, spearheaded by its 9. Kompanie under the command of Oberleutnant Mix, was able to fight through the Soviet forces and restore contact with the 290. Infanterie-Division. The II./Grenadier-Regiment 174 (under the command of Hauptmann Mix) was deployed in an offensive manner as part of Kampfgruppe Mix starting on the 23.11.1943 in the area around Newel. As Kampfgruppe Meyer concluded its capture of Chischnewo and the heights south of Lakuschki at around 10:00 that day, Hauptmann Mix and his Bataillon launched an attack from the left wing and after a short but tough fight (supported by a few StuGs) they managed to capture the villages of Kuznezowo and Naumowo as well as Hill 182.4.

On the 25.11.1943 the Bataillon then reached the area west of Lake Shadro and from here, via a surprise strike towards Jurowo, were able to foil an attempted Soviet counterattack. However the Soviets tried again on the 12.01.1944. By the next day their focus was on the central sector of the 81. Infanterie-Division, and they managed to wrest control of Hill 188.3 from Grenadier-Regiment 174. Hauptmann Mix was heavily wounded in the battle and evacuated.

In light of his successes during the fighting around Newel he would be decorated with the Oakleaves.

405th Award.
