Reinhold’s Knight’s Cross recommendation reads as follows…

“SS-Sturmbannführer Reinhold has particularly distinguished himself by his personal bravery and unfailing will to resist during the fighting at the Nijmegen bridgehead in the time period 18.-21.09.1944. Despite very heavy friendly losses and the inconsistent combat capabilities of unfamiliar formations temporarily attached to his Kampfgruppe, he succeeded in inspiring his men to fight and hold their ground, as well as repeatedly closing emergent frontline gaps by his skillful leadership. It is to his credit alone, as the soul of the resistance, that the Nijmegen bridgehead could be held for 3 days against overwhelming enemy tank forces, a battle in which 24 enemy tanks were destroyed by close combat weapons. He furthermore distinguished himself by his personal devotion to duty and uncompromising bravery following the ordered withdrawal from the bridgehead. In this phase he succeeded in stabilizing the faltering defensive front and erecting a blocking line on the northern bank of the Waal river.

Through this SS-Sturmbannführer Reinhold not only prevented a swift thrust of the enemy from the Nijmegen bridgehead to Arnhem, but also (and above all) provided the necessary time to eliminate the enemy forces that had landed at Arnhem.

Reinhold has always fought well during the fighting of the Division in the East and West. He is particularly worthy of the award of the Knight’s Cross to the Iron Cross.”
