Biography

16.06.1943: 'U-97' was sunk in the Mediterranean Sea west of Haifa by depth charges from the Hudson T of Australian RAAF Squadron 459.
The boat was hit by a bomb hit the diesel exhaust duct.
The crew could not hold it.
The boat had to be abandoned 10 to 15 minutes after the hit due to heavy water ingress and escaping chlorine gases.
27 crew members were KIA and 21 survived.
04.08.1943: Paul Engelhardt probably DOW in the Marinelazarett in Leer.
