August 31, 1942 at 4:15 pm The Gruppe "Broich" (commander: Oberst von Broich) of the 24th Panzer-Division drops hill No. 111.5 and heads north. The unit's task was to seize the nearby Kalach-Stalingrad railway line, 10 km west of Stalingrad. When the Germans arrived there, they noticed an approaching Soviet armored train. Leutnant Egon Reifner, accompanied by several soldiers from 3./Panzerpionier-Bataillon 40, rushed to the tracks and set up explosives, which left a hole several meters long after they exploded. As a result, the train derailed and was also fired by machine guns and 8.8cm Flak cannons, and the entire crew were taken prisoner. For such an extraordinary contribution, the Leutnant Egon Reifner received two Panzervernichtungsabzeichen in Silber.
