During the battles for Vitebsk in the winter of 1943-44, on the 10.02.1944, the II./Grenadier-Regiment 11 under the leadership of its new acting commander, Hauptmann Rust, was able to prevent a roll-up of the German bridgehead at Nowiki by holding the vital Lutschessa sector against all Soviet attacks. The following night a Soviet regiment overran the neighbouring Bataillon and rolled up the left flank of Rust’s Bataillon from the rear. In response Hauptmann Rust took control of the neighbouring Bataillon, an Alarm-Pionier-Kompanie, the regimental Pionier-Zug and the regiment Radfahr-Zug. With these forces Hauptmann Rust prevented this Soviet thrust from breaking through to the Orsha—Vitebsk railway line.

For his achievements during this battle Rust would receive the Knight’s Cross.

Awarded for his achievements during the fighting for East Prussia between Narew and Heilsberger Dreieck in the time period January-February 1945. Among other things he along with a messenger wiped out the crew of a Soviet gun and were able to capture it. Three days later, in the forests south of Wormditt, he and 15 men were able to eliminate a Soviet penetration through a successful night counterattack. With this action the hole in the German front was closed, and for minimal losses of their own Rust and his men were able to capture numerous prisoners, anti-tank guns and heavy mortars.
