The following newspaper excerpt (dated 05.07.1943) describes why Wernig received the Knight’s Cross…

“… The Führer has furthermore awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross to Feldwebel Emil Wernig, Zugführer in a Grenadier-Regiment. Feldwebel Wernig served as a Zugführer in a Trier Grenadier-Regiment during the fighting for the city of Ssewsk. In this time he managed to defeat a powerful enemy counterattack by climbing onto the roof of a house with a machine-gun. From here (and undeterred by the strong enemy fire) he shot up the oncoming Bolsheviks one after another from an open firing position.”
