Awarded the Knight's Cross for a counterattack he led in the area south of Orel on the 09.07.1943. With only a handful of forces, he repulsed the Soviet forces that had broken through in his Bataillon’s sector and pushed them back, regaining the old defensive positions as well as several dominant heights.
