Hubertus von Bonin was born on August 3rd, 1911 in Potsdam as son of Oberst Bogislaw von Bonin, his brothers : Oberst Bogislaw von Bonin (DKiG), Jürgen-Oskar von Bonin KIA 08.02.1942 as Observer, Transportgeschwader and RKT Eckart-Wilhelm von Bonin (NJG1).

He joined the Legion Condor in 1938 and was posted as Staffelführer 3. / Jagdgruppe 88.During the Spanish civil War he achieved 4 victories. Back in Germany he was posted to command 5. / Jagdgeschwader 26 "Schlageter" and was appointed Kommandeur of the I. / Jagdgeschwader 54 on January 1940. With this unit he fought on the Western Front. After three months with Jagdfliegerschule 4, Bonin was appointed Kommandeur III. / Jagdgeschwader 52, flying on the Eastern Front. July 6th, 1943 he was appointed Geschwaderkommodore Jagdgeschwader 54.
Hubertus von Bonin was killed in action in an airfight with Soviet P-39 Airacobra planes.
He achieved a total of 77 victories and was posthumously promoted to Oberstleutnant.
