During the spring and summer of 1942 he saw action against Soviet shipping in the Black Sea. iIn this capacity he sank 5 merchant ships (9400 GRT), 3 troop transports (3800 GRT) and 1 tanker (7000 GRT), while also damaging another 5 merchant ships. When he was awarded the Knight’s Cross he had also knocked out/destroyed the following ground targets (among other things):

6 moving freight trains (damaged)
6 stationary trains at rail stations
8 locomotives destroyed from low level
9 tanks
50+ motorized vehicles
8 aircraft on the ground
6 anti-aircraft bunkers.
