The following newspaper excerpt (dated 13./14.02.1943) describes why Göbel received the Knight’s Cross…

“Oberleutnant Goebel has particularly distinguished himself as a dive bomber pilot in the Mediterranean. His bombs claimed a number of victims that included the English AA cruiser ‘HMS Coventry’.”

By this time Göbel had flown 400 sorties.
