Awarded for his leadership as a Gruppe and Geschwader commander of transport aircraft on all fronts. They included the command of the Kampfgruppe z.b.V. 999 at Demyansk, the Kampfgruppe z.b.V. 9 in the southern sector of the eastern front during late 1942/early 1943, and as commander of Transportfliegergeschwader 1 in the southern sector of the Eastern front from mid 1943-1944.
