The following wartime excerpt describes why Schulz received the Knight’s Cross…

“Hauptmann Karl Schulz, commander of a Fallschirmjäger-Bataillon, captured and held an airfield (one which was secured by numerous bunkers) with his unit.”

This airfield was the Waalhaven airfield at Rotterdam, which was taken on the 10.05.1940. The seizure of this place proved essential for the success of the German airborne landings in this area.

When US forces looked poised to capture the city of Bologna, Schulz took effective charge of the available defensive forces. Driving from the city to the threatened positions in his red Fiat, he rallied the defending 1. Fallschirmjäger-Division and was able to check the US advance about 10km away from the city. The allies then suspended their attack on the city on 27.10.1944.
