Starting on the 29.08.1944, Vesenmayer's Batterie was charged with covering the retreat of Kampfgruppe Winkler along the road through the Buzau pass. He played a decisive role in ensuring the Kampfgruppe escaped through the pass along a good march route, saving hundreds of valuable vehicles for the army. For this he was awarded the Knight's Cross.
