The following newspaper excerpt (dated 28.05.1943) describes why Walter received the Knight’s Cross…

“Hauptmann Walter sunk (among other things) the English cruiser ‘Coventry’, a destroyer and 20000 GRT of merchant shipping whilst serving in the Mediterranean. During the battle of Tobruk he paved the way for our ground troops by destroying enemy fortifications. This brave officer fell at the head of his Geschwader.”

By this time Walter had flown a total of 184 sorties (including 58 as a bomber pilot).
