On the 01.-02.06.1942, in the encirclement ring around the 2nd Shock Army west of Teremez-Kurljandskij, Obergefreiter Gromeik commanded a tank hunter team of the 1. Infanterie-Division. In this time he succeeded in eliminating 5 Soviet tanks, one of which he destroyed all on his own with a magnetic anti-tank mine. By this action he significantly contributed to the German success in the area, and would be recognized with the Knight’s Cross.
