On the 25.01.1945 the Soviets launched an attack near the village of Usch, located south of Schneidemühl. Here the Grenadier-Bataillon Belgard under the command of Hauptmann Bauer offered fierce resistance, and in the fighting which ensued the commander particularly distinguished himself through his bravery while leading at the head of his Bataillon. In this time he personally destroyed several tanks with the Panzerfaust. He would later be awarded the Knight’s Cross in recognition of his overall achievements.
