The following wartime excerpt describes why Becker was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“Leutnant Becker distinguished himself in the foremost line as a fearless and exemplary commander during the heavy defensive combat in the Amiens bridgehead in the same manner as he did during all attacks by the Bataillon. During the village battle near Remiencourt the attack bogged down before the Noye creek, and in response he was the first to swim across to the opposite bank despite the enemy’s defense. He was also the first man in an assault boat during the crossing over the la Creuse river. He managed to conquer the river despite the enemy’s defense along its shore, and he thereafter successfully crushed the enemy’s resistance nests with an assault detachment.”

In addition to the actions described in this text, Becker had also previously distinguished himself with his Kompanie in Saleux and the adjacent Hill 61 on the 27.05.1940, a day on which they defended against 21 tanks and 5-6 companies of colonial troops. Becker and his men also distinguished themselves during the bitter combat for the village of Dury, a keystone of an Allied defensive position. Here Becker and his men ruthlessly plunged into the western part of the staunchly defended village. By doing so they enabled the attack of the entire Kampfgruppe to come back into motion and complete the capture of the village.
