Citation:
"Captain Trench and Serjeant Norwood were taken prisoners when their post was surrounded by greatly superior numbers and after a five day's journey were confined in a large barn near Antwerp. On 26 May finding a window unfastened Captain Trench accompanied by Serjeant Norwood crept out and ran for a neighbouring wood. After six days they reached Dunkirk in a rowing boat having walked over 100 miles and adopted various disguises. Both Officer and NCO showed great courage and considerable coolness and resource."
