The following wartime excerpt describes why Dehner was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“In the time from the middle of August to the start of September the 106. Division repelled numerous overwhelming Russian attacks that were supported by abundant amounts of armour. On one occasion within this period Generalmajor Dehner managed to make it to the command post of a particularly threatened Regiment as the enemy’s strong artillery fire began, and from here he would oversee the various countermeasures against the attacks. He personally dispatched Flak and heavy Panzerjäger against the enemy tanks that made it to the vicinity of his command post, sealed off the existing frontline gap through the counterattack of a Bataillon and in doing so prevented a further Russian breakthrough.

On the 13.10.1941 the commanding general received words of recognition and the highest praise for his tireless actions and the superb efforts of his Division during the fighting for the positions at the Wotrja and Wopj rivers as well as in the thrust through the Dnieper and Vyazma positions.”
