Awarded for his actions in the time period 13.-17.01.1945 during the defensive battle at Schloßberg. On the first day of this battle the I./Füsilier-Regiment 22 was dispatched against enemy forces that had broken-in at Blumenfeld. At around 18:00 on this day Demand’s Kompanie struck the village from the west, thrust through to the village centre and then succeeded in taking the military cemetery east of the village after a hard fight. Leutnant Demand distinguished himself during this engagement and in the days which followed.
