On the 23.02.1944 Major Ecker and his Kampfgruppe (consisting of his Bataillon plus elements of the II./Pz.Gren.Rgt. 9 and II./Pz.Gren.Rgt. 1027) were able to wrest control of the fortress-like group of houses at Buon Riposo, which were located on a hill and defended by one battalion each of US and British forces. Over 650 prisoners were taken in the process. Major Ecker would later receive the Knight’s Cross for this success.

Awarded for his actions during the defensive fighting near the Adriatic sea. At 02:00 on the 01.09.1944 Major Ecker led a Kampfgruppe consisting of elements from his Bataillon and the Panzer-Aufklärungs-Abteilung 26 in very bright moonlight against the village of Montegridolfo (north of the Foglia river). He and his men were ultimately able to eject the enemy from this village, and all throughout the battle Major Ecker was to be found at the head of his Grenadiers.
