During the fighting around Orel immediately after Operation Citadel Leutnant Eding and his 36 Munich Grenadiers defended a commanding hill for a period of five hours. He and his men continued their defense even after being overrun by Soviet tanks. Eding would also end up leading a counterattack with the help of a few Sturmgeschütze that managed to retake a section of trenches that had been lost to the enemy. Leutnant Eding would later be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this outstanding defensive achievement.
