Leutnant von Einem participated in an attack on the Lapland front as a forward observer. During this attack he took over command of a Jäger-Kompanie that was present in the thick of the fighting. With this unit he stormed the Soviet positions and defended them against multiple counterattacks afterwards. This frontline sector constituted an important bridgehead position for this Soviets, and for his actions here Einem would be awarded the Knight’s Cross.
