In mid-September 1942, during the fighting in Stalingrad, Oberfeldwebel Fleischer made the independent decision to strike against a large Soviet force with only minimal troops of his own. After bitter close combat he managed to eject the Soviet elements that had entered into an important position. He would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this action.
