The following press excerpt describes why Flex would receive the Knight’s Cross…

“As a squad leader in a Brandenburg Grenadier-Regiment, Unteroffizier Hermann Flex had an outstanding share in the defense against the heavy enemy attacks northwest of Orel. In particular he captured an important hill (one which the Soviets had already consolidated with greater numbers of troops) following heavy close combat during an independently led counterattack at the head of a few Grenadiers. For this deed, one of decisive importance for the holding of the entire sector, he was awarded the Knight’s Cross by the Führer. In the continued defensive fighting this brave Unteroffizier met a hero’s death.”
