Awarded for his achievements as a Fw 200 Condor pilot and Staffelkapitän. He was credited with at least 7 Allied ships sunk and a further 6 damaged. His greatest success was the sinking of 5 ships from convoy HG-53 by a flight of five Fw 200s under his command, for which he was named in the OKW communiqué of the 10.02.1941.
