The following wartime excerpt describes why Cuno would be awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“Oberst Cuno had the mission of defending against enemy forces that had thrust into the deep flank of the 2. Panzer-Armee via Szuchinitschi. However Gruppe Cuno was ultimately forced to pull back after it became surrounded by the much larger enemy and lost control of the decisively important Sikejewo railway station, located in its rear. Oberst Cuno succeeded in bringing the Gruppe back to Shisdra with minimal losses in men and materiel. Then, on his own initiative, he proceeded to immediately recapture the decisively important Sikejewo railway station. In doing so he laid the groundwork for a future attack against the enemy forces that had penetrated deeply between the 2. and 4. Panzer-Armee.”
