Following the German invasion of the Netherlands, reserve Flying Officer (probation) Wouter de Wolff managed to escape to England from Haamstede airfield. He was posted to the Royal Dutch Naval Air Service flying convoy defence patrols. De Wolff however saw littie action since there were too few instructors available in the UK to train the Dutch on English aircraft. In the second half of 1941, he was transferred at his own request and became pilot on the Spitfire. He became an instructor in 1942 and was posted to 322 Dutch squadron.

After the war Wouter de Wolff remained in the Air Force and was, apart from other postings, between March 1964 and November 1966 commander of Soesterberg Air Base holding the rank of Colonel-Pilot.
