As commander of a squadron fighters, he performed dive bomb attacks on enemy ships on the 23rd and 24th January 1942 and despite the enemy's air and fighter-defense he inflicted heavy losses to the enemy, demonstrating outstanding military skills in battle against a local powerful enemy and fearlessness and calm leadership in several battles.

After being awarded the 4th Knigh class of the Miliary Willem Order in February 1942, van Helsdingen again showed bravery, skill and loyalty, when he attacked the Japanese occupied Kali-Djati airfield with the four last remaining battle ready fighter planes in a suprise attack. He died during this suicide mission.
