During a Soviet attack at the start of March 1945, in a Carpathian forest, the 5./Grenadier-Regiment 587 held an important hill against all hostile attacks. When the Soviet infantry tried to storm the hill with the support of a tank, it was Grenadier Lampart who destroyed this vehicle with a Panzerfaust in a singular act of bravery done on his own initiative. This triggered the collapse of the opposing attack. For this act he would be awarded the Iron Cross First Class, and later the Knight’s Cross.
