For having participated in the landing operations of the British 1st Army on the Algerian coast between November 7 and 12 as captain of the motor vessel Marnix van St. Aldegonde, being subjected to numerous and extremely heavy bombing by German and Italian aircraft, and carrying out his task in an exceptional courageous and tactful manner under often trying circumstances, setting an inspiring example to his crew by his continuous loyal devotion to duty. As a result, he successfully fullfilled the role of his vessel during these momentous battle actions, saving the large number of British troops and the valuable cargo of war material he was carrying for destruction or damage respectively.
