He has distinguished himself by extraordinary courageous and tactful deeds in combat against the enemy as the leader of a Knok Ploeg (KP, section of the underground) on the Veluwe for taking care, especially in September 1944, of so called weapondrops and distributing these weapons through Holland and Brabant. As in early October, the Underground movement suffered heavy losses at the hands of the SD (Sicherheitsdienst, German Secret Police), he moved into the woods north of Apeldoorn were he was arrested on October 10th, as he stayed with a comrade who had sprained his ankle. He was transported to Germany and returned after the liberation. Within the Underground movement, he was an inspiring example to many by his cool determination.
