Biography

James entered service in Boston MA. Lost on the USS Buck DD420 Salerno Bay Italy while pursuing a German submarine after the invasion of Italy. Sunk by German Submarine U-616 shortly after midnight on 10-9-43 around 0030 hours 39° 57''N, 14° 28''E - Grid CJ 9128. Torpedo from U-616 was a Gnat acoustic torpedo fired from the stern torpedo tube. The Buck was hit on the starboard side forward of the stack. This blew off half of the bridge and the whole stack. The Buck sank in approx 4 minutes, Of the 262 Officers and Men on board 168 killed 94 survived. James was 23 years old.
