Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Lieutenant
Unit:
Corps of Royal Engineers (Briton Ferry, Glam). (Corps of Royal Engineers (Briton Ferry, Glam).)
Awarded on:
January 1st, 1945
Recommendation:
"On the night of 25th - 26th September, Lieutenant Bevan's platoon was ordered to take the leading wave of assault boats across the Neder Rijn near Driel, to bring back men of the Airborne Division.
It was not known whether there were any on the far bank. Lieutenant Bevan therefore led his platoon in the first boat and made contact with the Airborne Division.
He made many trips throughout the night and spent two hours on the far bank helping to organise the men coming down to the river and to evacuate wounded.
He displayed throughout a complete disregard for his own safety despite shelling, mortaring and small arms fire, and gave an outstanding lead and example to his men.
His work on this night was directly responsible for a large number of Airborne troops including wounded reaching safety.
I recommend him for the immediate award of the Military Cross."
