Bachmaier joined the III. / I.R. 20, but ended his employment a year later. In 1936 he then joined the replacement rifle company of the Mountain Jäger Regiment 100 in Laufen, where he was transferred to the 1st company in Brannenburg in 1937. In 1938 he attended a combat school course in Bad Reichenhall and then took over the position of platoon leader in the 1st company in the Sudeten Mission. In 1939 he took part in the Poland campaign as a platoon leader in the 7th Company, where he was slightly wounded. After the campaign in France and the Balkans, he was wounded in 1941 as leader of his company in Crete. From July he was chief of the staff company and an orderly officer at the regiment's staff, and from 1942 he took part in the Eastern campaign. In 1944 he was appointed commander of the III. Battalion of the regiment appointed. For his service in Italy, south of San Marino, he received the Knight's Cross on January 9, 1945
awarded. On December 17, 1944, Bachmaier took over the command of the Mountain Jäger Regiment 85 and in February 1945 attended a regimental command training course in Döberitz. Back with his regiment, Bachmaier was taken prisoner in May 1945 and was taken to the Tittling and Moosburg camps. He was released in September 1945.

On the 06.09.1944 the British launched a tank-supported attack against Gemmano (south of San Marino). The main hammer blow fell upon the Gebirgs-Jäger-Division, which was on loan to the 71. Infanterie-Division at the time. During this time Bachmaier and his Bataillon managed to repel all Allied attacks launched against them. Bachmaier would later receive the Knight’s Cross in recognition of this feat.
