    Biography

    Leo Steynen was born in 1916 and died in June 2006. He serve dwith the Dutch Army and the Dutch East Indies Army (KNIL). Before his capture he was with the 15th KNIL Batallion in Bandoeng. He became Prisoner of War with the Japanese in Birma and served four years working as forced labourer on the Birma Railroad.

    After the war he stayed for some time on leave in the Netherlands en went back to Indonesia in 1947. Here he served with the "NEFIS" in the Dutch Army, during the "Bersiap" period.

    Leo Steynen started his military career as a soldier and retired as adjudant. Besides the OHK for WW2 he received the "Ereteken voor Orde en Veiligheid (for service in Indonesia) and the Faithfull Service Medal.
