Biography
Karl Hanke was an early member of the NSDAP and was a member of the Reichstag (German Parliament) since 1932. In 1938 and 1939 he was Staatssekretär des Reichsministeriums für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda. From 1939 until 1941 Hanke was Oberleutnant der Reserve with the Heer and became SS-Gruppenführer in 1941. From 1941 he was appointed Gauleiter and Oberpräsident of the Gau Niederschlesien (Gau Lower Silesia). He was killed in an attempt to fled out of imprisonment during a transport of POW's, when he was shot by the Czech guards.
