During a Soviet attack on the decimated Regimentsgruppe 482, a local breakthrough was achieved in the sector of Obergefreiter Wildner. On his own initiative, and with only a few Grenadiers, he launched a counterattack that threw the Soviets back to their starting positions while also inflicting bloody losses. Through this act Wildner was able to save his Kompanie from possible encirclement and destruction, and he was thus decorated with the Iron Cross First Class and the Knight's Cross simultaneously.
