Biography

Joachim Domaschk reachend the rank of Oberstleutnant. After the Second World War he served with the Bundeswehr from 1956 until 1970 also reaching the rank of Oberstleutnant.

Joachim Domaschk joined the 1st Battalion of Infantry Regiment 10 in 1935, where he was promoted to lieutenant in 1938. As a member of the 14th Company, he took part in the Polish and western campaigns. After the campaign in the west, his regiment was converted to the Rifle Regiment 108. After the Balkan campaign, he fought in Russia from June 1941, where he was awarded the German Cross in Gold on April 29, 1942. From September 1942 he led the 1st battalion of the regiment, on November 1, 1942 he was promoted to captain off Stalingrad. In the battles for Stalingrad he distinguished himself in particular and was seriously wounded in the process. He was flown out of the boiler and from April 1943 reorganized the 1st Battalion in France. On October 12, 1943, he was awarded the Knight's Cross for his service in Stalingrad and promoted to major on December 1, 1943. From the end of 1943 he was back in service with his battalion in Russia. For his decisive achievement in the leadership of his battalion in the area west of the lower Dniester he was awarded the oak leaves on June 11, 1944. He was wounded for the eleventh time. After his recovery he joined the General Staff of the OKH in December 1944 and at the end of the war he was Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Personnel Office.

Awarded for his achievements during the battle of Stalingrad. There he and his Bataillon stormed the “Dsherschinski” tractor factory (14.10.1942) as well as the “Red Barricade” gun factory.

On the 10.05.1944 Domaschk and his Bataillon participated in the attack east of Balabauesti that aimed to eliminate a Soviet bridgehead west of the lower Dniester (which was mentioned in the Wehrmachtbericht as having been a great success). In a bold attack he and his men thrust through the Soviet lines during the morning while it was still relatively dark. They broke into the enemy anti-tank gun positions and overpowered their gun crews, ultimately eliminating 17 heavy anti-tank guns for no friendly casualties.

Domaschk and his troops continued to pursue the Soviets deeper into the bridgehead. They eliminated another 29 anti-tank guns and artillery as well as numerous other weapons and equipment, which included 7 trucks captured. Domaschk would be wounded for the 11th time on the 13.05.1944, however his actions had by then impressed his superiors to such a degree that he was awarded the Oakleaves to his Knight’s Cross.
