For extraordinary heroism in action on 6 June 1944, in France. In the initial landings on the coast of France, Captain Zantow (then First Lieutenant) landed early in the assault as part of the Regimental Medical Detachment. Undaunted by the heavy and intense enemy fire, Captain Zantow attended the wounded on the beach. With complete disregard for his own safety, he moved about the beach rendering aid to the numerous casualties caused by the enemy fire. By his personal bravery under such hazardous conditions, he was instrumental in the saving of many lives. The courage and high devotion to duty displayed by Captain Zantow reflects great credit on himself and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
