Citation:
"During the afternoon of 16th July 1944 in the action on Barbee Farm, Pte (noe L/Sgt) Whitehouse was a No. 1 of a Bren LMG of the forward section. Snipers were very active in the company area and were causing a number of casualties. He worked his way forward to a position from which he could deal with the snipers and he succeeded in silencing a number of them with well aimed fire. When the Coy was ordered to withdraw from the position Pte Whitehouse covered the withdrawal of the remainder of the Coy enabling them to withdraw unmolested by small arms fire from a number of the enemy who were still in the vicinity. This soldier by his splendid example and coolness was largely responsible for maintaining the high morale of the section particularly after the company commander had been wounded. Pte Whitehouse was only persuaded to withdraw after a direct order and with Coy Comd and CSM was the last to leave the position bringing with him the Bren and 6 magazines."

Awarded Croix de Guerre with Bronze Star.
