At the time of his death, Erich Petermann was Führer of the 4. / Kradschützen-Bataillon 64 with the rank of Leutnant. He died of his wounds inflicted during the advance for Stalingrad.

On 23.06.1942 Oberfeldwebel Petermann received an order to carry out a combat mission in the area around Sofijewka (in the district of Pjatichatka). During this mission Petermann managed to personally destroy 3 enemy tanks in close combat, among other achievements. For his success on this day and his repeated demonstrations of bravery and excellence in battle he would receive the Knight’s Cross.
