Biography

Adriaan de Keizer decided to go into hiding in 1942 because he did not want to work for the Germans. He ended up on a farm in the Biesbosch and joined the Werkendam LO in the fall of 1944. This is also how he became involved with the Biesbosch Group, which captured 75 German soldiers and kept them locked up in a few houseboats hidden in the Biesbosch. As he himself once said, in the beginning we were a bunch of savages but soon there was no turning back.

In the winter of 1944 the crossings through the Biesbosch to liberated territory began. With rowboats and canoes, messages and hundreeds of persons were so transferred. Adriaan de Keizer was one of these Liniecrossers and made 16 trips from Werkendam to Drimmelen. During one of his 16 crossings walking through a minefield, one of his friends tripped and booby-trapped. Adriaan got shrapnel in his leg and had to be left on a crib. Blood loss rendered him unconscious and nearly drowned by the rising water. Barely was he able to be rescued later by his comrades.
