Joe Johnson's first assignment was with the No.2 ITS, where he graduated on 26th February 1941. His next training was with the No.5 EFTS where he graduated on 3rd May 1941 and No.10 SFTS (graduated 8 August 1941 and promoted to Sergeant). On 9th August 1941 he was posted for embarkation to England where he arrived on 27th August 1941. On 8th February 1942 Johnson was promoted to Flight Sergeant.
His commission was on 19th June 1943 with No. 108 Squadron and he was promoted to Flying Officer on 19th December 1943.

After his European tour he was repatriated to Canada on 20th July 1945. From 22nd July he was stationed with Northwest Air Command and on 28th February 1947 he was transferred to Western Air Command. He was released from duty on 5th March 1947. On 10th January 1955 he re-entered the Royal Canadian Air Force as an Education Officer. He served with the rank of Flying Officer until 14th November 1962 (service number 301154) when he retired.

"During the recent period of intensive air activity over Sicily this officer destroyed three enemy aircraft and probably destroyed one more. Since his arrival in this theatre of war he has completed a large number of operational missions and has at all times displayed exceptional keenness and determination."
