On the evening of the 26.07.1942 the Infanterie-Regiment 156 (mot) reached the Manytsch river. There the Regiment’s 1. Kompanie formed a small bridgehead around Swoboda, and a military bridge was set up over the river on the following night. However before the bulk of the I. Bataillon had crossed the Sporny dam, located upstream, was blown up by the Russians. The bridge was covered by floodwaters and made impassable.

In this moment of crisis Oberst Eisermann crossed over the river in a Sturmboot, with other regimental elements following. At around 17:00 on the 27.07.1942 Oberst Eisermann commenced an attack against Wessely Chut with the lead Kompanien of the II. Bataillon. Following a heavy friendly artillery barrage Eisermann and his men broke into the village and reached its opposite edge. One German Zug pushed beyond the village edge and reached the southern side of the dam that the Russians had blown.

The Russians fell back or surrendered in response to this unstoppable drive. In total the Regiment captured 900 prisoners, 5 artillery pieces and 30 MGs, among other things. Its actions had brought about the necessary conditions for the construction of a new bridge over the Manytsch and further pursuit battles beyond it. Oberst Eisermann received the Knight’s Cross for this notable success.
