Awarded for an outstanding combat achievement in late July 1944 on the Normandy front. He participated in a counterattack against elements of the US 90th Infantry Division (along with troops of the 2. SS-Panzer-Division "Das Reich”) early on the morning of the 23.07.1944. Along with the remnants of his Kompanie (33 men) and a Panzer from "Das Reich", they managed to capture the vast majority of a US battalion (I./358) in a skillful engagement that included the use of Panzerfausts to deadly effect against buildings. The prisoner count totalled over 500, and included 234 unwounded men, 11 officers and the battalion commander.
