"The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Edward Smith Hamilton (ASN: 0-22165), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion, 347th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division in Northern France. On 6 August 1944, near ****, France, Major Hamilton was given the mission of capturing a bridge across the **** River in the center of town. All other bridges had been blown and the bridge in question was being prepared for demolition. Major Hamilton went forward with the leading elements of his battalion and personally lead a flanking movement against the bridge. When his troops were in position, he led the assault on the bridge before the enemy was able to cause its destruction. His personal leadership under enemy small arms and artillery fire was an inspiration to his troops and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military spirit."

Major Hamilton's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.'
