"For meritorious achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy at Makin Atoll, Gilbert Islands, 20-30 November 1943. A member of the first assault wave of boats to land on Butaritari Island, he aided in the annihilation of six enemy soldiers, encountered shortly after the landing, by creeping up to within a few yards of the entrenchment and throwing a hand grenade. This act killed two of the enemy, and wounded two others, preventing this group of Japanese from inflicting any casualties on our landing units."
